The first Nobel prize awarded to Emil von Behring in 1901 for his work on "Serum therapy for Diphtheria". Emil von Behring and co-workers injected diphtheria toxins into different organisms such as horses and pigs. After these animals developed immunity, they isolate antitoxins (now known as antibodies) from their serum. When injected into a different animal, these antitoxins protect the animal against diphtheria.
