The medulla oblongata and the pons are the major brain centers that regulate respiration. The respiratory centers in the brain are stimulated by an increased concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in arterial blood. Chemoreceptors present in the carotid arteries and aortic arteries are sensitive to changes in arterial CO2, oxygen (O2), and pH. Stimulation of the respiratory center by high CO2 level causes an increase in the rate and depth of breathing, thus remove excess carbon dioxide and reducing blood acidity.
