Plant-based Low-calorie Diet Lowers Signs Of Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) involves long-lasting inflammation in the digestive tract and can cause damage to the lining of the bowel with symptoms like blood in the stool, diarrhea, weight loss, belly pain. To find out whether calorie restriction might help to fight inflammation, mice with IBD were fed with low-calories, low-protein, plant-based diet. Gut inflammation and other signs of IBD improved. Average colon length returned to normal size, suggesting tissue regeneration in IBD mice with a low-calorie diet.
