Two scientists, Dmitri Ivanovsky and Martinus Beijerinck contributed to the discovery of the first virus, Tobacco mosaic virus. in 1892, Ivanoski reported that extracts from infected leaves were still infectious after filtration through a Chamberland filter-candle. In 1898, Beijerinck was the first to call 'virus', the infectious agent of the tobacco mosaic. Beijerinck independently performed the filtration experiments and observed that the infectious agent was able to reproduce and multiply in the host cells of the tobacco plant.
