Diatoms are groups of photosynthetic microalgae found in the soils, waterways, and oceans around the world. The cell wall of these diatoms is made of silica. Due to which dead diatoms sink to the ocean floor and form large deposits of diatomaceous earth.
Diatomaceous earth is used for the construction of soundproof buildings. As silica is inert in nature, the diatomaceous earth is used as a filtering agent for alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, medicines, and chemicals. It is also used in toothpaste manufacturing industries as well as in optical image quality measurements.
